Our Story
Em and Jade met in the summer of 2012 when Em took a newspaper reporter internship at the “Cape Cod Times,” where Jade was the breaking news reporter. Being from 1,500 miles away in Kansas, it’s a miracle Em ever even considered a summer internship in Jade’s hometown of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The couple fell for each other quickly, but the summer ended and Em had to go back to school in Texas, thus beginning the long-distance phase of their relationship. This spanned Em studying for a semester abroad in Spain and taking an internship at USA Today in Washington, D.C. before the two ended the long distance and moved to Fort Worth, Texas., where Em finished their journalism degree.
After two years of dating, the couple married in October 2014 near Jade’s scenic hometown of Chatham. Soon after marrying, Willie, their mini poodle, came into their lives, bringing energy, fun, and joy to their newly formed family. Their journalism careers took them to a newspaper in Southwest Florida for a short period, but after making a career change, the couple moved back to Em’s hometown in the suburbs of Kansas City in 2015. Their second dog, a shih tzu mix Lulu, joined the family in 2016, bringing a steady presence, goofiness, and sense of calm with her.
After spending time sorting out careers and doing some soul-searching, Em and Jade moved to Colorado in September 2019, a place they had visited many times, and began working on a new chapter of their lives. During a particularly eventful and important summer in 2021, Em came out as trans nonbinary and Jade came out as a trans woman, both finally putting words to feelings with which they had long quietly wrestled. Through the next months, the couple’s lives were turned upside down, losing many old friends and family, but gaining new ones and a new community in the process.
In 2022, Em and Jade added another pup to the family: a rambunctious and adorable terrier mix named Scout. Through these past few years, they’ve continued to work on their fixer upper, build community, and explore New Mexico, Wyoming, and beyond with their three pups.
In 2024, Jade and Em are celebrating more than a decade of love and are taking this rare opportunity to “re-do” their wedding as their true selves at their new home state of Colorado. They are excited you’ve decided to join them in celebration and can’t wait to see you!
